Over two years into the life span of the hot selling Nintendo Wii console it’s time to take a step back and evaluate some of the console’s most frustrating shortcomings and how this cash cow of a machine could have been so much more. Personally, I had my Wii in hand the day it came out and was instantly thrilled. Nowadays, I still look at the cute little white box lovingly, but find myself continuously baffled by the shortsightedness of Nintendo in execution and curse it on a regular basis for a number of reasons.

I had never been so hyped for a new toy. My first impression was love at first sight. The interface, the controllers, Wii Sports, Zelda, all just a phenomenal start for my little buddy. Sure Red Steel was a bit of a let down. The control style was weak rather than revolutionary, but hey, it was the Wii’s first shot at translating a first person shooter to the motion control set.

I came to some early conclusions. First, Wii Sports bowling, while simplistic, was hands down the best video game bowling simulation I had ever played. The entire Wii Sports package was very complimentary to the console’s control scheme. Second, Zelda: Twilight Princess, while an outstanding entry into the series, really wasn’t helped or hindered by the control set. It was the first example of kind of forcing some motion control schemes into a title that didn’t benefit from it. Still, it wasn’t an overall detriment for the game.

On the other hand, I also picked up Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, since I’d always liked the series. I was torn by this title. The main game itself was absolutely made for the new motion-sensitive control set. It did revolutionize the title. The mini-games on the other hand were mostly hit and miss.

Surprisingly, two years later, the console hasn’t come very far in my eyes, and the farther it does advance, the more it shows its weakness. So consider this my open letter to Nintendo on what’s really spoiling the Nintendo Wii for me and many others. I’m going to be the first to admit, though I still really do love my little Wii, but it’s only really busting the market because of the low price point and wide ranging demographic appeal. I’ve owned every Nintendo console since the original NES, I was a massive Atari-head back in the 2600 days, and I’ve spent many years gaming hardcore FPS on PC as well as owning both the original XBOX and the 360. I’m decently rounded in this category, with only the PS2 and PS3 being out my realm of experience, but for purposes of this article I’ll remain Sony neutral.

” It’s All About the Looks. Let’s beat the horse that’s been dead the longest first. The graphics power of the Wii was sub-par from the day it came out. Not surprisingly, Nintendo wasn’t too thrilled about sharing a lot of detail on the hardware specs before release. It’s base of a PowerPC “broadway” processor with an unspecified ATI GFX processor left a lot guessing, but just from a simple performance and eye-candy test from a casual player, it’s just not really very impressive. Even with some of the newest titles it’s obvious that graphics are not this console’s strong point. That’s okay, that’s hardly the most important piece of a console, but I think it’s a serious hit to longevity and credibility in the gaming community when Nintendo’s “next gen” console really can’t even compare favorably to Microsoft’s “last gen” XBox console. Pixel per pixel, the best looking Wii games can barely compete with the best Original XBox titles.

Even completely giving Nintendo a pass on not giving us better than 480P output, when you start putting the graphics out to a HD set, even the highest power titles are pale. It really starts to hit home when you see even ported games like the latest Call of Duty title having to cut major components of game play to even translate down to something the Wii can handle. Some of the sharpest looking of the Wii games look “rough” around the edges, so to speak when playing on high resolution screen. There’s not really an argument to be made here, it’s simply a fact. I have an extremely hard time arguing for even anything beyond “modest” improvement over the graphics of it’s older sibling Game Cube Console.

Yes, graphics don’t make the game, but when you jump back between something as astoundingly sharp and beautiful as the original Gears of War to even the hottest and greatest of the Wii titles it’s not even a fair comparison. I don’t think Nintendo needs to push to be the best in the graphics race, but I think Nintendo needs to at least put itself in the same class, which it simply hasn’t done with the visual power of the Wii. Again, this is probably the least important of my concerns about the console, but it’s still a significant black mark on the Wii and one of the reasons that that it still has trouble bridging that gap to hardcore gamers. The problem is not just how the titles look, but the low processing power of the unit also limits aspects of gameplay. Some of the latest generation game engines can’t even be developed on the Wii because it’s simply the scrawny weakling of the big three consoles. Nintendo seems happy with hot sales and a wide appeal and just a small chunk of the heavy gamers market, but I think they could have gotten away with a little bit more effort even if it had driven the price point up a bit more.

” An Unimpressive Walk Down the Video Game Aisle. How many Wii owners have really taken a good hard look at the titles in Wii section of their local Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Game Stop or Future Shop? Apart from a handful of heavy hitter Nintendo exclusives and the yearly round of classic ports like your Madden or Tiger Woods games, the titles available for Wii are phenomenally bland and generic. There is simply a glut of half-assed party games out there. Your standard, rushed out movie tie-ins come and go, and even the occasionally interesting or innovative titles seem too few and far between. When you get past Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda, maybe a few others here and there, how many titles really have you devoting nightly time to your Wii on any regular basis?

I generally find myself looking at my cross-platform releases on the 360 instead of the Wii, even in games where graphics aren’t really an issue like your Guitar Hero or Rock Bands. Madden still doesn’t really fully translate to the Wii-mote/Nunchuk style of play, and face it, if I really am going to hit up a game for a lot of hours and in-depth gaming, I’d rather boost my gamer-score on X-Box Live and play in HiDef. I can’t really pin-point one cross-platform title that is significantly improved, if improved at all by the motion control set of the Wii.

Don’t get me wrong, when the motion control set is implemented with thought and care, in games like Mario Galaxy it’s a beautiful thing. But it’s really the exception rather than the rule. Sure there are lots of Wii games out there, and they’re retailing $10.00 cheaper, but the selection is anemic at best. Why is this? The heavy hitters in game development don’t take the console seriously.

A prime example of this is in a comment from Mark Rein at Epic Games:

“I don’t think there’s a lot of money on making engines for the Wii because the big software dollars right now are being earned on Xbox 360 and they’re going to be earned on PlayStation 3, and I think unless you’re going to sell your engine to Nintendo, you’re going for scraps on that platform.”

I’m not holding up Epic as the end-all of game studios, but Rein makes some good points. For a studio like Epic which prides itself on pushing the envelope in game engine and performance, it’s a tremendous step backward making a game for a current gen console that’s still using last-gen technology. The current incarnation of the Unreal Engine cannot even be scaled down to run on the Wii’s hardware specifications. Developing for the Wii is simply about putting out titles quick and cheap to turn a buck unless your name happens to be “Nintendo.” And let’s face it, Nintendo may have some legendary properties, but they aren’t churning out Mario and Zelda quality titles very often.

” The Storage Capacity of a $5.00 Thumb Drive. One of the most massive disappointments of Nintendo’s short-sightedness is the they built a console around a platform to highlight downloadable content and then gave the console virtually no storage capacity to handle it. It’s a perplexing issue to say the least, because one of the strengths of the console showcases its most glaring weakness.

When confronting my biggest frustration of my Wii it’s the fact that over the last few months I’ve gotten more quality game play time from Wii-Ware titles than I have over-the-counter titles. There are some exceptional titles now available on Wii-Ware. World of Goo is one of the best dollar for dollar investments I’ve made in the console. Boingz is another great Wii-Ware title and I’m currently putting some time into some other quality Wii Ware titles like Lit, a third person puzzle game and Onslaught, a surprisingly good First Person Shooter, well worth the 1000 Wii Point ($10.00) investment.

But let’s look at this dilemma. The console has 512 meg of useable flash memory. That is absolutely nothing. I can get that much memory over the counter in a thumb drive for pocket change. If I hit a decent sale, I can get a 2 gig flash drive nowadays for $10-$15.00. I just bought a 4 Gig Mini-SD card for my digital camcorder for $14.95 last month. Now don’t start with the “but it’s expandable by another 2 gig with an SD card” argument. That’s total deception. Let’s just ignore the fact that upon its release, Nintendo was gouging people for $90.00 bucks for the 2 gig SD cards with the “Wii” logo on them back in 2007. For those that are considering owning a Wii console, make sure you understand that the SD expansion is not useable memory. It’s simply a storage dump. You can’t even access save game info on it, much less play stored titles.

Even if it was a quick task to swap for games and data back and forth between the SD card and the flash memory it would still be a major inconvenience. However, Wii owners know that even the data swapping process is painfully slow. It’s amazing how long it takes to copy even a modestly sized game from flash memory to the SD drive. It can often take several minutes, then inexplicably, it can actually take a couple of more minutes alone to delete the original data off the flash memory (though that’s seemed to have improved with some of the more recent updates to the Wii OS). What this means is that while we are getting better and more sophisticated Wii Ware titles available, you pretty much have to go through this dumping process every time you want a new one, then make hard decisions about what to keep and what to store back on the SD.

In addition, some of the cooler things that Nintendo itself is offering, like the Internet-based Nintendo Channel that has some nice features, content and video playback ability take up scads of memory blocks. I had to finally dump the Nintendo channel just to accommodate a Wii-Ware title. How could Nintendo not anticipate this issue? I would totally back off this if the expandable SD memory was directly usable by the system. I could live with a solid 2.5 gig on this console, but it just isn’t there. I can promise that if Nintendo were to release a small external memory expansion where the storage was directly accessible and usable by the console it would sell like hotcakes. It’s not just downloadable titles that are the issue, it starts to run into silly issues that are alien to consoles like the 360 and PS3. Rock Band or Guitar Hero for instance. I see a small track package of songs I’d like to own, I can download them on to my 360 hard drive. On Wii, there’s an entire source of income they’re missing in downloadable add-ons. Of course, you can still get those add-ons by buying an additional disc for near full-game price on Wii. However, it’s simply another outstanding reason to continue buying titles that are cross-platform on the consoles that can handle game patches, title updates and downloadable content. Right now, I would say that the Wii investment alone is worth it for the Virtual Console and Wii Ware titles coming out. But the storage capacity simply cripples this machine as a viable platform for this type of content.

” Who’s Wii is this anyway? While the above concerns I all consider major drawbacks, this and the next concern are not quite as much of “game-breakers” for me, but just add a couple of more irritations. That being said, I don’t give a damn if you think it’s not fair to compare the consoles, I’m going to use the Xbox 360 as a template of what works for this specific concern. The Wii needs better differentiation and organization for its player profiles. The 360 does a wonderful job of this. With the Wii, you can create your own “Mii” avatar that represents you, which was a cute feature that was uber-cool for the entire first 3 weeks you owned the console, but there is still no “profile” system for the console like you have in the Xbox 360 world. When I boot my 360, I log on to my profile. For multiplayer, we can log into multiple profiles at once. Within this profile all my game data is stored and accessible. I can customize my environment, game settings, personal information, etc. The Wii has still not evolved beyond the 20 year old system of each game managing it’s own data. The sad part of this is that it’s a badly needed on this console because of its tremendous appeal to very young gamers who tend to spend more time playing around in menus and settings when they shouldn’t.

Every gamer that gets on the console has full access to all saved game data, console settings, everything. I want a profile. I love the fact that when I get on the 360 I feel like my console environment is mine. When I’m on my profile and boot a disc, I only see my own personal game data. Of course, this all plays into whole Gamer Score system on Xbox Live. I know that Wii Console owners trivialize “Gamer Score,” but the excitement and appeal of this feature in the Xbox world is a huge draw. Just like you used to chug quarters into the Asteroids Machine to move your initials up on the high score list, Gamer Points are a thing of pride and status in the Xbox world, and it’s only possible by having personalized profiles. In the Wii universe every player that picks up a controller has full access to mess with everyone else’s data without a second thought. Can you do this on a 360? Of course, but it has to pre-meditated. You have to log into someone else’s profile and do it. Every player can password their profile if they feel threatened by that. This comes down to having an “identity” as a gamer in the Xbox world. On the Wii, your only identity is what you have disc to disc or title to title. That’s just so 1988.

” It’s Amazing What Fun You Can Have With One Hand. The major selling point of the Wii apart from the price point of course has been the “revolutionary” control system. The Wii-Mote/Nunchuck system is a radically different concept in gaming. Have you noticed, though how few games really utilize this combination to it’s fullest? Worse yet, have you noticed how completely clumsy some games can be when not really designed for this type of control set? Don’t get me wrong, I actually love the Wii remote. I like the fact that games with a simplistic control set can be played with one hand. But unless your thumb is about four inches long, it’s really not all that great when you have to bring the direction pad into play, or if you actually have to use combinations of these buttons. None of the buttons rest intuitively for play.

I’m not saying that the Wii should abandon this concept, but I really think that certain games should implement a more traditional control system. Dare I say that the they should have redesigned the optional add on “classic controller” to be a bit more like the Game Cube or an Xbox controller and given the option in some games, like the Madden series for instance, for an alternate more traditional control system? The current alternative of turning the Wii-mote on it’s side for some Virtual Console and standard titles never “feels” quite right. I also have an irritating love/hate relationship with the classic controller. For classic Mario fans, I believe most of you will know where I’m coming from with this next concern. Mario is a game based on two buttons. One button you hold down to run, almost universally, this is the button you press with the tip of your thumb while you execute the jump with interior knuckle intuitively. The classic controller layout complete fouls this up by organizing the two buttons that in a configuration where the second button in this scheme doesn’t fall beneath the bend of you thumb anymore.

When it comes to Virtual Console games, I’ve spent a ton of time reliving some great times with Super Mario Brothers 3, Super Mario World and the original classic Super Mario Brothers, but the classic controller layout is just set up for a very difficult ride with these virtual console games as well as others.

My other beef with the controller layout for games like FPS genre entries make the classic “lounging” style of gaming a thing of the past. One of the small pleasures in life is throwing your legs up across the couch. Reclining against al old beat up cushion and resting your hands on a controller in your lap. Having to sit up and be at a reasonable angle sometimes gets to be a real drag and kind of makes the “relaxation” part of gaming a non-option in some cases. Again, this may not be a fair criticism, but it is something I miss when playing certain titles on the Wii.

When the Wii control set works well, it’s a tremendous sense of power, when it doesn’t, it’s a massive drag.

This has been a pretty long-winded complaint session for the Wii Console. In fairness, I love the fact that this console is such a huge hit. It shows that these very high price-points for consoles like the PS3 and XBOX 360 are drawbacks for these machines even with as much power and functionality as they have. It’s sadly humorous to see Microsoft redesign the Xbox Dashboard to give more “Wii” like features like Mii-Style avatars as if that’s going to make a difference in stealing some of Nintendo’s market share. It’s proof that they are completely out of touch with why the Wii is so popular.

However, I do think that long term that Nintendo is setting up for failure for continuing to put out technology that is so far behind the curve in most respects. With the average gap between each generation of consoles that are released, think about how antiquated Wii hardware will seem in 2011. Can you imagine 2 years from now Nintendo introducing a console that finally has graphics on par or slightly better than the original Xbox?

There has to be a compromise that keeps Nintendo’s efforts at least in the ballpark with current gen technology. There is a whole segment of the gaming community that doesn’t give the Wii a serious look, and I have to believe that Nintendo is missing out on long term opportunity to grow their product line.

It’s been very easy the past year or so for Nintendo to step back and not really care about some of the concerns like I’ve expressed above because they can pretty much simply point to the still heavy demand for their product. However, even though I’m a mutli-console household by choice, I can’t imagine being at a point where I would settle on the Nintendo Wii as my “primary” or only console no matter how much I would miss the sucker. Imagine all the things you really love about the Wii rolled up to console with the power and diversity of something like the 360.

So this is my laundry list. I think that most of these are pretty simple to fix and still keep their console up to 25% lower than the retail cost of the 360 or PS3. However, if I’m the owner of one of those other consoles, walking through the Wii section of the department store would make me take pause to consider whether the Wii is worth the investment. If Nintendo continues to think that they can stay on top of the market with nothing more than the name, a couple of heavy hitting properties and cheap price tag, I believe they are in for a rude awaking with the next thing decide to put out on the market. They should certainly step back and take certain stock in how Sony counted on PS2 loyalty would translate to sales for the PS3 regardless of the price. Customer loyalty to the brand will only take you so far.

Get to work, Nintendo! In the next couple of years Microsoft and Sony are going to catch up with the features of the Wii that make it unique and force you to play on more even ground with the other big boys on the block. The next generation of Nintendo’s consoles better come equipped to compete.

Nintendo Wii arrived November 19th 2006 with Xbox360 already released and Playstation 3 the HD god of new aged gaming ready to take over the world. Behind all the hype of the two new systems that would bring HD(High Definition)gaming to new heights, it was hard to hear the muffled voice of Nintendo, but it wouldn’t be long before Nintendo’s shriek of new innovative gaming would turn the chatter of HD gaming into a subtle whisper. Nintendo knew that their was power in innovation. Nintendo wanted to bring the whole gaming experience to new levels. The Nintendo Wii changed the whole outlook of the gaming world.

Right before the holidays Nintendo placed game stations or “Wii Stations” in hundreds if not thousands of shopping malls across the nation to advertise the Wii capabilities. Soon after the Wii virus spread. The Young as well as the Old raved about the fun and innovation the Nintendo Wii brought to the market. I remember standing in the center of my local shopping mall watching all generations grab hold of the Nintendo Wii’s remote controller called the Wiimote. I learned tons of information while observing the fun and play testing myself, thankfully their was an Nintendo representative to instruct me and inform me about the Nintendo Wii. The Wiimote is a wireless controller that contains motions sensors that literally takes interactivity to new levels. Have you ever played air guitar? Well imagine playing air baseball, tennis, or bowling, you can do this all with the wiimote and a game called Wii Sports. Wii sports and many other games use the motion sensor technology to put you in the game and take interactive play to new levels. The Nintendo Wii will also allow four controllers to be connected wireless to the counsel simultaneously so you and your friends can play together. As I stood watching everyone in my local shopping mall have the time off their lives with the system. I just knew the Nintendo Wii would change the whole perspective of the gaming world.

I realized for many years consumers young and old have been afraid to enter the world of home counsel gaming due to the difficult controls and many buttons that are now on most all video game counsel controllers. Nintendo knew that to be successful with the competition of HD gaming. They had to make gaming more interactive, easy, and fun. But the Wii capabilities didn’t stop their. Nintendo stayed true to its long term fans. With the Nintendo Wii you can download your favorite classic titles (via internet) to your Nintendo Wii. So yes you can play Super Mario Brothers just like you used to when you were a kid. Their are many Nintendo original titles that can be downloaded from an online market place that can be accessed through your Nintendo Wii.

Overall I am greatly impressed and happy that I can now interact with video games like I never could before. I can actually play video games with my mother and father who wouldn’t dare touch a video game counsel controller until now. The Nintendo Wii has brought an experience to experienced and unexperienced gamers that won’t easily be copied. Nintendo has been the most innovative gaming company that the world has known. When I found out that the Nintendo Wii was only $250 dollars it sent me through the roof. Not only is the price great, but the experiences I will have playing my Nintendo Wii will be even greater.

Hi my name is D. Reed, I am happily married, to my beautiful wife J. Reed. She loves to sing as well as I love to play my saxophone. I love playing video games and am proud of my achievements in life. I was born and raised in Northwest OH and lived in Northwest OH until moving to Central OH to continue my education. I am a music ed major and am presently working on a certificate in Audio Engineering. I’ve only been married for a little while now, less then a year that is. But so far married life is the most beautiful thing: I feel; that one can experience in life. Well thank you for reading.

I figured out the specifics of spin, and curving the ball on the “real” tennis court from playing a video game!

Though that’s really the only game I’ve ever played to any extent, I was excited when my daughter came to visit me, and brought her brand new Nintendo System Wii with her!

I now regard myself a 100% Nintendo Wii convert! As I read my first limited review on the new Nintendo System Wii, I found myself questioning the motion-reactive controls (the remote control and nunchuck) and the wand that you needed to locate in front or on top of the television set. Not only that, but reports of the Nintendo System Wii graphics seemed abominable.

Would the Nintendo System Wii be able to contend in a video game domain where, whenever you are performing NBA 2007 on a Playstation 2, you can see the perspiration droplets on Shaq’s realistic facial expression?

The Nintendo System Wii comprises a diminutive and noiseless console and fits virtually anyplace. The Playstation 3 comparatively is immense and is more difficult to hide. Sony has made some odd choices when it comes to their flagship console, and it lacks the innovation of the Nintendo System Wii, in so many ways, aesthetically as well as in function. Nintendo System Wii has it over Sony in almost every department.

In spite of my reluctance regarding the Nintendo System Wii wand/remote, there is zero awkwardness or discombobulation regarding them. The remote control and nunchuck controls are logical, and the Nintendo System Wii provides complete on-screen direction just in case you ever become befuddled. The Playstation 3 on the other hand provides no equal controller or progressive simplicity of use.

Nintendo System Wii should be commended for bringing out a $300 game console that does not forget a whole generation of users behind. The Nintendo System Wii arrives set up to play all GameCube games and includes concealed ports for GameCube controls. Although Sony didn’t make the mistake of backwards compatability, this is one of the issues with Xbox, many of the newer games don’t play properly on Xbox 360.

The Nintendo System Wii is sinking in to our culture in many ways, apart from the ease of use of the Nintendo System Wii, there are so many other great facets to it. The fact that there is the potential to burn calories and work up a sweat, is a revolution in itself. There are companies out there now devising Public Rooms you will be able to rent for parties, that are set up for the ultimate Nintendo System Wii experience. I’ve also seen reports of Fitness Centers putting Nintendo System Wii systems in for their clients to use as a warmup before their workout.

All in all the Nintendo System Wii is set to revolutionize society as no game console has done before.

Nintendo’s latest home console system was released in North America on November 19th 2006. Nintendo’s goal seems to focus on casual games which entertain a broad demographic of gamers and non-gamers. Nintendo’s product is the cheapest new generation home console system on the market, retailing for USD $249.99, and challenges to change the way people think about gaming.

A Kid’s Console?

Historically, Nintendo has produced “kid safe” console designs where most games were innocent and cute. Nintendo has changed their target audience to a broader audience with different styles of gaming. You can purchase a first-person shooter, such as, Call of Duty 3 or you can purchase child centric games, such as Barnyard, Cars or Cooking Mama. There are also many middle-of-the road games that all ages can enjoy, such as Wario Ware: Smooth Moves, Elebits and Wii Play.

This “kid’s console” has morphed into the “casual gaming console.” This is a device where a gamer can invest fifteen minutes to fifteen hours of playtime. A father of two can find time to play Tennis in Wii Sports or get in a game of nine-ball in Wii Play. A teenager can snowboard down a hill in SSX Blur and a younger child may yearn for Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The Nintendo Wii is well suited for kids but it goes beyond children. Grandparents are picking up the product after watching their children and grandchildren play. It might be for a golf game or a racing game, but it shows the attractive nature of the Wii. Just as many houses are equipped with a version of Monopoly and Scrabble the Wii becomes something to bring out when friends are over.

The Control Scheme

All features seem to fall second to the most overpowering aspect of the console: The controller. Nintendo, and their customers, have invested a huge risk in the Nintendo Wii controller, known as the “wiimote” by fans. This device will make or break the system and its future in the market.

Some skeptics say the Wii remote is just another “novelty device” doomed to fail and become replaced with a standard controller. Although the Wii controller can be tilted sideways to play in “classic” mode this isn’t the intended interface for the majority of games. The fate of the Wii controller will fall into the hands of the software developers.

The Wii controller is unique and requires special attention to detail and design to be implemented in a game correctly, especially a game ported from another system without such a control design. The game is only as fun as its design and implementation. A game which utilizes the controller in a poor fashion will push customers away. Too many games utilizing the controller badly can look bad on the system overall.

The system offers gamers an experience unlike a standard console, primarily because of its unique control scheme. The gamer is controlling the game in true 3D by moving the Wii controller and its secondary Wii nunchuck in 3d-space. The learning curve should be high, the complexity great, but oddly enough, a well designed game makes learning the control scheme easy.

The Demand

Like a viral youtube video the Nintendo Wii is contagious between relatives, close friends and acquaintances. One gamer has a Nintendo Wii and a few friends come over to visit and play – before they know it their asking where to buy one themselves. Their reason for purchasing is all the same: it is fun.

Console demand will give rise to game demand. The true success in the console will be in giving the customers what they want: fun games with great use of the controller functionality. In many cases, this may limit the games that can be ported from other consoles to this unique platform. Graphics can be reduced to fit the console design but an entirely unique control scheme can cut developers interest in releasing a title for this platform.

Third Party Support

Many people look at the last few Nintendo consoles as market failures. The Nintendo 64 failed to capture a large audience and most adults couldn’t find a use for their Nintendo GameCube after purchasing Mario Kart, Zelda, Super Smash Brothers and Mario Sunshine. All hit titles were in-house “first party” development efforts.

Nintendo must be able to draw a large quantity of third party development support to their system. Publishers like Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, Take-Two, THQ, Konami, and Square Enix are a few hot publishers that produce many first-class games each year. These publishers, along with others, will be needed to furnish the console with power-packed titles to keep the system valuable in the years to come.

Keep It Fun

If Nintendo can continually keep gamers having fun with the console it will be a solid success story. Games need to take complete advantage of the controller and not develop it as an after-thought. Ported games will take longer to produce to satisfy the controller design or the game will be more frustrating than fun.

Nintendo should use their successful game titles as proving grounds for full bodied release titles. Wii Sports was a great tech-demo but each game within the bundle could be fleshed out into a stand along product. Wii Tennis and Wii Bowling are two great examples of a franchise that could draw in casual gamers.

Keep It Fresh

Nintendo has relied greatly on their franchises: Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Donkey Kong. They cannot rely on these franchises to keep the system alive in an expanding market. These titles can be used to drive initial sales with a new release each year, but new innovative titles and creative new franchises must be developed to continue the sales trends.

Consumers have three strong consoles to consider purchasing with Microsoft Xbox 360 holding the lead for the titles. Sony will no doubt triple their game line by Christmas of 2007; Nintendo will have to fight to keep an edge. They may put themselves in their on niche industry of “interactive entertainment” but, unlike the portable Nintendo DS, they have strong competition for the home entertainment dollar.

Jennifer and Derrick Schommer are gaming enthusiasts that write many gaming articles. They decided to take their passion to the next level and started an online gaming e-commerce site at

This is just the case with the Nintendo DS, which was released by Nintendo in order to compete with the other companies that have been coming up with hand held gaming consoles. The console has also been provided with a touchscreen, which is one of the many amazing features of the Nintendo DS. The Nintendo Ds was followed by another game console called the Nintendo DS Lite, which was packed with more or less the same features as its predecessor, with some additional features added to it.

There are innumerable people, who have got a great liking for video games and video game consoles, but are unable to own a console, due to their high prices. But things have changed nowadays and people can finally get cheap game consoles, for playing their favorite games. Nowadays not only can the people get to buy a cheap Nintendo Dual Screen, but can also buy a cheap Nintendo Dual Screen Lite if they want. There are innumerable sources from where the people can cheap Nintendo Darn Super and cheap Nintendo Dual Screen Lites.

In order to get the gaming consoles at very cheap prices, people have to know the exact places to start their searches. It has been seen that most online shopping websites or price comparison websites are the places to look out for, if anybody wishes to find game consoles from Nintendo for cheap prices. Thus people will be able to enjoy playing games on these wonderful game consoles, without having to pay hefty prices for them.

By buying a cheap used Nintendo or cheap used Nintendo DS Lite, the people will be able save much more money than what they could have saved by buying the cheap game consoles. However, since most people prefer buying brand new game consoles for themselves, it is generally seen that there are very few takers for buying used game consoles.

Considering the fact that great game consoles like the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite, are a sort of asset for the average player, a great number of people are seen to in the search for buying new game consoles. They would not be satisfied with a used game console, and this is why they insist on buying cheap new Nintendo and cheap new Nintendo DS Lite, even if it costs more than the used game consoles.

In the beginning there was Pong. The masses were intrigued, poking and prodding at Pong in wonder, seeing what might be the future but was probably a fad. Pong was interesting, but Pong was soon forgotten. Until Pacman, and Space Invaders, and Caterpillar, and all the original quarter chomping cabinet games of old. The arcade game was born of ingenuity and the disposable income of an increasingly stagnant generation with money to burn.

Nintendo’s success in video games was born of a desire to cash in on these experiences, seeing the success of Space Invaders and Asteroids by companies like Taito and Atari. Nintendo’s prior history, nearly 100 years old in Japan, involved making household toys and playing cards. They saw electronic games as a major new market and were intent on being apart of it. The first product was Radarscope, pandering to the shoot and fly by action of existing games in the marketplace.

It was a massive failure and so Nintendo turned to Shigeru Miyamoto to craft something special that would appeal. It was Miyamoto who, after taking ideas from shows like Popeye (and a license that fell through for Nintendo) and utilizing the everyman hero, crafted Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong was released to eager quarter heavy pockets and Nintendo of America made nearly 100 million dollars in the first year alone.

Donkey Kong did many things differently that made it successful. Not only did it stray from the usual shoot-em up concepts of previous games, it introduced levity and light hearted music to the industry that it hadn’t yet seen, with actual characters and a villain. Kids nationwide were willing to overlook the mistranslation of whatever it was the Japanese company was trying to call their barrel throwing ape, and sucked the game up eagerly. (There are theories that it was originally Monkey Kong, Kong for King Kong, and was misspelled somewhere along the way…doesn’t really matter at this point though does it?)

And Mario? If you can’t see the parallels to the Popeye license in the game, you’re not paying much attention. A plucky working man must fight an apelike (or an ape) to retrieve his lady love, displaying super human strength. Mario was yet to be named in his earliest outing, and as he wielded his hammer of justice, he found fans the world over. Ironically, the name of Nintendo’s mascot was originally Jumpman, a surprisingly practical name, no? There’s a story that the character’s name was changed because of his similarity in appearance to Nintendo of America acquaintance Mario Segale. Whatever route he took to his name, the Mario we see and love today is the same one from 1981, short overalled, Italian and mustachioed.

In 1983, Mario returned in his own adventure. After someone pointed out that he looked more like a plumber than a carpenter, his profession was accordingly changed and Mario as we know him today was born. Luigi also made his first appearance here as Mario’s brother and rival in jumping dumping and taking out koopas, goombas, and other bad guys for maximum points. The original arcade Mario Bros. showed up in arcades hot off the heels of Donkey Kong’s success, but didn’t have quite the same success itself. It was in fact a stage in which video gaming itself was dying. Atari’s home consoles were overpriced and not producing and the idea of arcade gaming was being segwayed in favor of these at home gaming attempts. Companies bankrupted and nothing was seen for almost 2 years as a result.

It was Nintendo itself that would successfully breach the barrier between the arcade and the living room again, single handedly reviving the dying industry and saving video gaming as we know it.

With the launch of the Famicom in Japan in 1983, Nintendo executives decided that they needed a killer piece of software to sell consoles. They turned back to Miyamoto and his goofy plumber for a new start and he delivered. Released in 1985, Super Mario Bros. was a revolution in home gaming. It redefined the technology in home gaming at the time and created the Mushroom Kingdom as we still know it. The goofy ideas that floated Donkey Kong and Mario Bros a few years before were released in earnest in Super Mario Bros and born was the mushroom chomping, pipe warping antics of Mario and his brother Luigi. The invention of the platforming genre as well as the lengthy at home, sit down gamin console made Super Mario Bros one of the top selling games of all time, sending Japan and the US into Mario madness, creating an atmosphere willing to accept and support Nintendo no matter what. The video gaming age was not dead, it was just born. And Mario led the way.

Super Mario Bros 2 was born as a direct sequel to the first game with an entire new batch of levels, poison mushrooms and wind gusts. The game never saw release in the US though as it was considered too hard for fickle US gamers. The game did eventually see release in 1993 in the SNES Mario All-Star Collection as Lost Levels.

The game Americans know as Super Mario Bros 2 is in fact a completely different game that Nintendo acquired the rights to and inserted Mario and friends into. The result is a game that didn’t quite match up with any of the other Mario games. The game, while totally different from the actual Mario games was very popular in the US and introduced a variety of new features such as forward and backward scrolling on screen and greater freedom of movement. Plus the really cool floating princess feature. Likewise, the game was released in Japan as Super Mario Bros. USA.

And then there was 3. Super Mario Bros 3 was the most anticipated game of 1990, with the prerelease buzz enhanced even more by events like The Wizard (a video game centric film) in which the game was highlighted in a gaming contest before it had even been released. The game itself eventually became the best selling game of all time that wasn’t packaged with a console with 17 million copies sold. It introduced the map format, as well as the introduction of the suits that changed Mario’s powers to match certain conditions, and the epic boss battles throughout the game. The final world was huge and Bowser a step above and beyond the villains thus far.

In 1990, as Nintendo was preparing to release the Super Famicom, they looked to Miyamoto one more time for an epic gaming experience that would sell consoles and show off the power of their new console. He gave to them Super Mario World. Mario World took the formula created in Super Mario Bros 3 and enhanced on it in as many ways as it could. The introduction of Yoshi was hailed by many as genius and the inclusion of new methods to exit levels and unlock secret levels. Mario World held within it 72 levels, and 96 exits, many of those levels with multiple exits. The worlds all varied vastly from each other, offering sky exits, times when flying was necessary and when Yoshi was necessary, and the ever popular ghost houses with their multiple exits.

After the success of Donkey Kong Country, Nintendo set for itself new graphical requirements and Miyamoto’s sequel to Super Mario World was reworked into Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. Considered by many to be one of the greatest (if not most popular) platform games ever made, it follows the adventures of Yoshi as he carries baby Mario around on his back in his quest to revive Mario to adulthood. The game introduced throwing attacks, jumping, floating, and flying, ramming, and even turn into a helicopter.

But, it was only a precursor to the next Mario release. Since Mario World 2 was released in 1995 only a year before the release of the Nintendo 64 it suffered the dreaded late console life shuffle and was mainly ignored. However, Nintendo came out swinging once again with a masterpiece technical demo to show off everything their newest console could do. Mario 64 was the first fully 3D realized game, and single handedly invented the genre as we know it today. With the introduction of the analog stick and non-linear play, players were given the option to choose which parts of the game they completed and how they did it. The game was a monstrous success and held every game even slightly similar up for closer inspection. Unfortunately for Mario fans everywhere, Mario 64 is considered the last true entry in the series as there has only been one Mario game since for a console, the Gamecube’s disappointing Mario Sunshine.

Mario Sunshine was an experiment in moving away from the normal aspects of the game. Mario and friends are on a vacation and run across a graffiti ridden island which Mario is given a water pack to clean up. It’s a wonderfully designed, fun enough game, but it fails only because it forgets what makes Mario Mario. The game itself followed the same design as Mario 64, with Mario trying to get all 120 shine sprites and clean the island of Del Fino, but somehow didn’t strike the same chord as each of its forerunners.

Mario Galaxy is now in development for the Nintendo Wii console, a game which looks to revolutionize once more the entire genre through use of the Wii Remote. The details are still sketchy, but the basic idea is that Mario is in outerspace, able to jump farther than ever before, as he attempts to rescue the princess. Sounds familiar, yeah? We’ll see how this one turns out.

Mario has found success in handhelds, television shows, movies, books, and a hundred different spin off games like Mario Kart, too numerous to list all of here. But as you can see, just from the main sequence games released on the major Nintendo consoles, Mario’s impact has been monumental, literally shaping the face of video gaming for 25 years.

The Nintendo Wii has just barely hit retail stores, and already the homebrew scene is fast at work. Creating not only killer applications and homebrew games, but also developing (or at least helping develop) the worlds first Nintendo Wii mod chip(s). In this article I am going to discuss Nintendo Wii Mod Chips and give some of the features, pros and cons of the 3 different Nintendo Wii Mod Chips that have just recently been released.

The good news for Nintendo Wii gamers is that regardless of which Nintendo Wii mod chip you buy – you’ll have all the basics with each one. You will be able to play all Nintendo Wii Backup games (on DVD-R or DVD+R discs) and can use 8cm or 12cm DVD discs. You will also be able to play all Gamecube Backup games, import games as well as Gamecube Homebrew games. It really gets down to installation of the Nintendo Wii Mod chip and the features and functions, and future upgrade options of each Wii mod chip.

What is even more surprising with these new Nintendo Wii Mod chips is the prices that they’re being sold for. I remember quite clearly the days of the very first Playstation 2 mod chips, costing in excess of $90.00 US Dollars. It seems the Wii chips have opted instead for a lower entry price, in an effort to gain a greater piece of the Homebrew / Development / Modchip market. The prices range anywhere from $44.00 to just over $50.00, depending on the chip you decide to buy.

At present, there are actually 3 different Nintendo Wii Mod chips which will hit the market and online stores within the next week or so. While many online news sources seem to focus on just 2 of the 3 mod chips, perhaps because they’re unaware that there is a third chip in the making, I’m going to cover all 3 of the mod chips in the hopes of enabling you, the gamer, to make the buying decision that’s right for you. And after reading this article, I honestly believe that your decision will be based solely on price, and perhaps the option of an upgrade (or lack of) for the Wii Mod Chips.

Wiinja Nintendo Wii Mod Chip

The Wiinja Nintendo Wii Mod chip was actually the very first Wii chip to hit the market. While many online news sources seem to disregard this chip, it is still the very first and one of the easiest mod chips to install for the Nintendo Wii. Like the other mod chips for the Wii, the Wiinja will enable you to play all Wii and Gamecube Backup games, as well as Wii Import backup games, and original import games with just a single swap. Gamecube Import and Homebrew games are fully supported. While the other mod chips promise that their modchips, in time, will have their own custom OS to enable additional features, the Wiinja chip does not make this claim. In fact, they have stated that their chip is not meant to be upgraded. Stealth mode is still built in, even into this mod chip, and whether or not the lack of an upgrade feature is a deterrent is entirely up to you, the user. Often times many modchip manufacturers claim upgrade features, but then they lack the support for the upgrades, which tend to come out very rarely, if ever at all.

WiiKey Nintendo Wii Modchip

The manufacturer hype states the following: Unlock your Nintendo Wii with the worlds first truly upgradeable Nintendo Wii Mod Chip. The WiiKey for Nintendo Wii is made by the famous xenoGC team, responsible for the xenoGC Gamecube line of mod chips, and now, with their WiiKey, Wii owners can enjoy all the benefits of a team of great developers with a truly upgradeable Nintendo Wii Mod chip. The WiiKey comes ready to use, and offers an almost wireless installation. When they say almost wireless, what this essentially means is that there are Quick Solder pads for the chip. This method enables you, the gamer, to simply position the chip in the correct place on the Mother board of the Wii, in order to then apply a little bit of solder with a soldering iron. The WiiKey chip does however also require that you solder 4 wires to the specified places on the Wii motherboard. The WiiKey mod chip was the first chip that boasted full upgradeability through DVD-R discs to which you can burn / backup the new firmware updates, put The DVD in to your Nintendo Wii, and it will run and update the chip. Once again, the WiiKey also supports loading of both Wii and Gamecube backup games and import backup games. Original import games can be played as well, with a simple, single swap methos. Gamecube Homebrew games are also supported. Whether or not this mod chip will end up with it’s own custom OS is something we’ll just have to take a wait and see approach with. However, it offers everything you want, for a VERY reasonable price.

And finally, the last Nintendo Wii mod chip (often claimed to be the very FIRST Nintendo Wii Modchip) is the only chip in this round up that actually does not require any wires at all.

CycloWiz Nintendo Wii Mod Chips

The major advatange, or selling feature of the CycloWiz Nintendo Wii mod chip is in how it’s installed. Unlike the other 2 mod chips in this round up, the CycloWiz actually does not require you to solder any wires to the Wii mainboard. In fact, much like the WiiKey, you’ll simply use Quick Solder pads which are strategically placed in the design of the CycloWiz to enable you to simply position the chip on the Nintendo Wii Mainboard, and gently put some solder onto the points. This will make the required connections, and the chip will simply be installed, with absolutely no need figure out where wires are to be soldered or whether or not you’ve got the right type of wires, etc… The CycloWiz is also a fully upgradeable modchip, with promised firmware updates for the chip from the manufacturer. Again, I want to stress that firmware updates may not at all be required and perhaps may not come for some time. I myself do however like the idea that the chip will not be outdated should some new function or requirement become the norm.

To sum it all up, all of the Nintendo Wii Mod chips boast the features below. The only exception to this is the upgrade feature which is NOT available on the Wiinja chip. Take a look at the features, and decide for yourself which Wii mod Chip is right for you.

Fully upgradeable via DVD/disc (future proof, expect cool features to come)

Direct boot of Wii backups (like originals)

Direct boot of GC backups (like originals)

Boots different region GC games/backups

Boots different NTSC region Wii games/backups

Supports multi-disc games

Supports DVD-R and DVD+R

Built-in audio fix (for games using streaming audio)

Works in all Nintendo Wii consoles World Wide – USA, Pal and Japanese versions!

Now it’s up to you to decide which Nintendo Wii mod Chip is right for you.

Let’s start off with the the history of Nintendo the founding company of the Wii and many other popular games systems like the Nintendo 64 and gameboy and Nintendo DS.

Following is a list point form of the the companies origin and growth spanning over one hundred years.

-1889 The companies founder Fusajiro Yamauchi, who is the great grand father of the present day president of the company, began manufacturing card game called “Hanafuda” He set up his small business in the Japanese city of Kyoto.

-1902 The original intent was to manufacture the card game, to export to different parts of the world. The game was a success abroad as well as in his native land Japan.

-1975 Nintendo and Misubishi Electric developed a kind of video game system and they introduced the microprocessor into video game machines for the first time.

-1977 Nintendo started to create video game systems for the home user together with Mitsubishi.

-1978 Nintendo started selling coin operated gaming machines, using their micro processors. They then shortly thereafter started a separate division for manufacturing their coin operated machines.

-1980 Nintendo came to America for the first time, they created the branch Nintendo of America Inc.

-1981 Was their defining year for Nintendo they developed the coin operated video game “Donkey Kong” This video game became the hottest, most sought after, video game in history.

-1985 Nintendo started to sell the first Family Computer Entertainment Systems in the US. The unit included the famous Super Mario Bros, with Mario the worlds most famous little moustached plumber.

-1987 By this year nintendo was the first to reach sales of more than one million units in the video game manufacturers.

-1996 Nintendo launched the Nintendo 64 it was the first of it’s kind with a 64 bit processor. For a home video game it was unimaginable for many. In the first day alone more than 500,000 units were sold. Later on that same year nintendo shipped some 350’000 units to North America, the entire shipment was sold out in less than three days.

-1998 Nintendo released game boy color and host of new games The legend of Zelda, Pokemon, Donkey Kong Country 3, Perfect dark etc..

-2001 the gamecube was released, which was the sixth generation of the Nintendo Entertainment system (NES).

-2006 On April 14th 2006 Nintendo released the seventh generation of the “NES” the aptly named “Nintendo Revolution”. Despite protests from video game manufacturers and the Press Nintendo changed the the name To “Wii” The name at first received much ridicule from many constituents, stating that the name seemed to convey a sense of childishness. Nintendo responded and said ” Revolution as a name is not ideal; it’s long, and in some cultures, it’s hard to pronounce. So we wanted something that was short, to the point, easy to pronounce, and distinctive. That’s how ‘Wii,’ as a console name, was created.”

Since it’s launch the “Wii console” has sold more units than it’s competitors (xbox and playstation) combined. The Financial Times released that the nintendo Wii had surpassed the Xbox in terms of sales quantities despite the fact that the xbox was released a full year earlier. Nintendo hopes to have sold more than 50 million “Wii Consoles” world wide by 2009.

Nintendos target Demographic with it’s ” Wii” is much wider than previous game machines. They have no intention of battling with Sony for the playstation 3 but to increase the amount of people to play games. A broaden the reach. They have hired academy award winning advertisement giants like Stephen Gaghan. They spent over 200 million in advertising alone throughout 2006. Has it worked? You bet it has….pensioners as old as 103 have been reported playing with the Wii console, a a magazine in the UK has stated the Queen Elizabeth 2 has been playing the Wii .

As the ad slogan states “Wii would like to Play”
